The Movie: The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Quick Thoughts:

Best Non Incredible Hulk Character: Betty Ross was perfectly acceptable in her role. I thought Liv Tyler did a nice job of portraying all of the feelings she was dealing with, being torn between her current relationship with poor Phil Dunphy and this monster that her ex had become. I wouldn't say she is the best of the MCU female leads, but she does more than OK. The issues in this movie lie beyond her.

Worst Non Incredible Hulk Character: General Ross was kind of creepy, way over the top and annoying. He felt like a throwback to the more outlandish characters in past iterations of comic movies. It really felt like an outlier when you look at how sharp the character design is in the rest of this modern MCU. He was basically an extremely poor homeless man's J. Jonah Jameson.

Best Scene: Just by process of elimination, it is probably the final fight between Hulk and Abomination. Visually it was epic, tons of destruction and well shot. The movie itself lacked in so many areas, this was the one that was the cleanest overall.

Why it Was Awesome: Honestly, it wasn't. The Hulk fight scenes were all pretty good and I liked Betty. Beyond that, there wasn't much else to really dig into.

Why it Sucked: Everything else. The story wasn't focused and as great as Ed Norton is, he just don't work in this role. He was just too... Ed Norton, it was hard to get lost in him being Dr. Banner. General Ross was a bit much and, even though it isn't REALLY their fault, a second straight movie where the big heel is a mimic version of the superhero felt uncreative. Also, I despised the scene where Ross, Betty and Bruce were flying in the helicopter as Abomination destroyed the city. It is this big, mammoth moment dripping with death and dread and Betty and Bruce are canoodling in the back of the helicopter like they are headed to prom. Why are they giggling and playing around in that moment? Felt silly. This just never came together. JT smash!
