WCW King of Cable Tournament 11/92 - 12/92

- This was a tournament where all matches leading to the finals at Starrcade would be contested on TV to determine who the King of Cable was...the first two rounds occurred in November, with the finals on 12/18 at Starrcade

- First Round: Rick Rude vs. Barry Windham (Saturday Night)....Jim Ross & Jake Roberts on commentary...we start right up with a great first round match here...cool announce team too...good analysis by Jake, saying they need to pace themselves and not use too much energy early...Windham works to wear down Rude, focusing on his lower back and abs...Jake is really damn good on commentary...Rude gets control and works the neck...this is a nice even keeled pace they have going...smooth all around...Barry gets back into it and they do a nice back and forth, really selling all the damage nicely...nice count out tease as I thought that would be the finish for sure...Rude rolls up Barry, hooks the rope and steals the win to advance...nice little match and some great commentary to complement it

- First Round: Sting vs. Brian Pillman (Saturday Night)....Ross & Roberts back on commentary...now we are talking, this should be a good one...winner gets Rude...Jake is funny ripping on Sting, saying he wants to smack him in the head...Pillman uses some trickery to take advantage and slowly begins to pick him apart...Jake is basically coaching Pillman...Pillman gets a figure four as Jake talks about the effects of the move...Sting fights back, but Pillman clips his knee for a near fall...nice psychology here with the assault on Sting's knee...Sting makes a hot comeback and we get some good near falls...Sting eventually gets the win with a bridging back suplex

- First Round: Vader vs. Tony Atlas (Saturday Night)...Ross & Zbyszko on commentary...very unique match here, but I am up for some hoss brutality...another good announce team...Vader is a beast here but Atlas is pretty damn big too...Larry says Vader has been humiliated since losing his World title to Ron Simmons...good stiff strike battle early...in a great spot, Vader tries to splash Atlas in the corner, but Atlas catches him and almost dumps him out to the floor...Vader keeps pounding on Atlas and finishes him quickly with a splash off the second rope to move on

- First Round: Barbarian vs. Dustin Rhodes (Saturday Night)...Ross & Zbyszko on commentary...more stiff hoss fun to come here...sounds like Barbarian is a replacement here...Dustin has a big bruise on his face from a previous attack in the locker room...they brawl to the floor as the announcers push the fact that Dustin is not at full speed here thanks to the attack...Barbarian slows things down as Ross wonders if he is missing the coaching of Cactus Jack, who is not at ringside...Larry says Dustin is risking his career and his tag titles by continuing in this match...Barbarian really controlling much of this match with his overpowering offense...Dustin ducks a charge and Barbarian hits the steel post, allowing Dustin to roll him up to steal the win

- Second Round: Rick Rude vs. Sting (Clash of Champions XXI)...no commentary for some reason...this is joined in progress with five minutes left in the time limit as Rude has Sting in a bearhug...Sting regains control with just under two minutes left...we get some near falls as time ticks down...Sting goes for the Scorpion but time runs out as he is locking it in...Gary Michael Capetta announces that judges will make the decision, and it is a split decision...Hiro Matsdua gives the match to Sting, Larry Zbyszko scores for Rude and Ole Anderson gives the match to Sting...Sting advances to the finals

- Second Round: Vader vs. Dustin Rhodes (Saturday Night)...Ross & Michael Hayes on commentary...Ross is great here telling the story of how Rhodes needs to wrestle the match of his life and duck and dodge Vader...Dustin actually outslugs Vader early, including hitting an early bulldog...talk about Windham & Rhodes splitting up this past Wednesday...we have judges at ringside once again...Hayes says that Vader was clubbed by Sting with a 2X4 right before this match started...fans really behind Dustin here...Vader takes over and just slowly pounds Rhodes all around the ring...Dustin takes a beating and keeps kicking out...Dustin can't defend himself as Vader slugs away at him in the corner...Dustin almost steals it with a cradle and a flying shoulderblock for two close near falls...Vader hits the splash off the second rope and advances to the finals

- Finals: Sting vs. Vader (Starrcade)...Ross & Jesse Ventura on commentary...good strategy breakdown by Ross, saying Sting's plan is to push Vader deep into the match to wear him out...Sting tries to go toe to toe early, but Vader wins that...Jesse says Sting should take the countout...Sting lands some shots and finally knocks Vader down and follows with a big back suplex...Sting clotheslines Vader hard to the floor, ripping Vader's mask off in the process...Sting follows with a cross body to the floor on Vader and Harley Race...Vader kicks Sting in the face on a Stinger Splash try, but Sting comes back with a DDT and a huge superplex...Sting hooks the Scorpion, but Vader gets the ropes...Vader regains control on the floor...love the analysis by Ross & Ventura, makes it seem very legit...Sting keeps landing some counters, but he can't take full control...good slugfest in the corner as Sting invites Vader to hammer on him, to which Vader obliges...Sting trying to get Vader to punch himself out...awesome psychology here, paying off the strategy that Ross outlined early...Sting gets a couple near falls, but Race distracts him to allow Vader to gain control....Vader hits the second rope splash but can't cover...Vader tries it again, but Sting catches him with a powerslam and gets the win and the King of Cable trophy...that was an awesome match with tremendous psychology

- This was a pretty damn good tournament...the commentary and wrestling throughout was top notch...definitely check this out if you have the access
